Background

In 2001, Ray and Sue Haakonsen established Beautiful Gate Lesotho in Maseru with seven abandoned babies. Since then, Beautiful Gate Lesotho has cared for over 500 infants and young children ages 0-5. These children have been given a place to grow and thrive in a nurturing and safe environment filled with the love and support of our caring staff. It truly is an oasis for these orphaned, abandoned, HIV/AIDS affected, and other vulnerable children.

Beautiful Gate’s campus features several amenities for the many children and staff we minister to. There are five children’s houses, a chapel, a clinic, a pre-school, a playground, administrative and maintenance buildings, and housing for both short and long term volunteers.  This campus allows us to serve up to 75 children and over 45 local staff. Our playgroup program is housed in one of the buildings and provides learning opportunities and creative playtime for children 6 months to 5 years.
